The RHEL Lifecycle Paradox
Just Because You Can Stay on Old RHEL Doesn't Mean You Should
One of the defining features of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is its long lifecycle. A RHEL major version has a standard lifecycle of 10 years, with options to extend it even further. That long lifecycle comes with an important caveat: as a release moves from Full Support to Maintenance Support to Extended Life Cycle, the types of fixes, enhancements, and support options available become progressively more limited.
The overlapping portions of the RHEL lifecycle exist to give organizations flexibility in when they upgrade, whether that's moving to a new major version or staying on a particular minor version for longer. That flexibility can be valuable when facing business, technical, or regulatory constraints, but it is important to be realistic about the tradeoffs involved.
In this session, we'll break down the phases of the RHEL lifecycle and what those phases mean in practice. We'll look at how feature requests, security updates, bug fixes, and the support experience evolve over time, including the tradeoffs of remaining on older major or minor versions. We'll discuss why the answer to a perfectly reasonable request is sometimes, "You'll need to upgrade to a newer version."
